Jean-Jacques Alcalay is a photographer specializing in wildlife and natural environments. Trained in film photography as a teenager, he refined his eye by working with his father on the enlarger and drawing inspiration from the masters of framing. His early explorations led him to street photography, before a trip to Norway sparked a lasting interest in nature and the great outdoors.
He has been collaborating with the Biosphoto agency since 1990 and works closely with photographer Brigitte Marcon, his partner. His practice is characterized by a precise study of animal behavior and interactions, whether between individuals of the same species or different species. Each image aims to document observable and reproducible behavior in the natural environment, with a focus on rigorous composition and fidelity to the subject. His regular trips to Iceland, Alaska, Borneo, Australia, India, and southern Africa form the basis of his fieldwork.
Jean-Jacques Alcalay has won several awards in international competitions, notably for his images of seabirds, primates, and marine mammals. His approach, based on patient observation, focuses on capturing snapshots that reveal rarely seen behaviors.
