Markus Varesvuo is a well-known Finnish nature photographer specialising in bird photography. Born in Helsinki, he developed a passion for ornithology in his teens, which he soon combined with photography. After an initial career in business, he decided to devote himself entirely to his passion and became a professional photographer. His work focuses on the birds of the Western Palearctic, which he photographs in their natural habitat, without artifice, flash or captivity. He favours a respectful and patient approach, which enables him to capture authentic and intimate moments of avian life.
His images, published internationally, have won many prestigious awards, including the World Press Photo (2nd Nature prize), the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the OASIS Photo Contest. The author of several books, including Oiseaux : instants magiques, he is also co-founder of the birdphoto.fi platform and a European Canon ambassador. Through his work, Markus Varesvuo conveys a marvellous and committed view of biodiversity.
