Pablo Barrena is a Spanish nature and wildlife photographer based in Cádiz, southern Spain. Trained as an environmental scientist, his relationship with photography is deeply rooted in a lifelong connection with nature and wildlife. Birds are at the heart of his work, not only as photographic subjects, but as a way of observing, understanding and documenting the natural world.
Much of his photography focuses on the wildlife of his local environment, particularly birds and their behaviour, habitats and relationship with human-shaped landscapes. Spending long periods working with the same species allows him to develop a deeper knowledge of their ecology and behaviour, seeking images that go beyond simple portraits and tell something about the animals and the environments they depend on.
This strong connection with local wildlife is complemented by international travel, which gives him the opportunity to discover and photograph species, ecosystems and conservation realities from other parts of the world while maintaining the same naturalistic and documentary approach.
